Are you using Mac OS X 10.7 or earlier version; and thinking of upgrading to the latest Mac OS X 10.8? If yes, then you need to take care while proceeding to upgrade, as people are meeting with errors while upgrading their current Mac version to the latest Mountain Lion OS X 10.8. This sternly causes worry lines on the forehead of the users, as failure will lead to data loss!
Error Appeared
Running the Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion installer on your current Mac machine goes smoothly until it reboots. Though it runs fine up to a certain point of installation, the process aborts; reporting the hard drive of the Machine as faulty and throwing the following error message:
“Incorrect number of file hard links
Bad hard link creation date
(It should be 3273005659 instead of 3314922810)
Hard link record has data extents (id = 33147751)
Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk…disk, and restore your backed-up files.”
Rebooting after this error appears a pop-up message that says, "There was a problem installing Mac OS X. Try reinstalling.", and plunge in this loop.
Resolutions
A stubborn freezing error screen does not actually prove that the running hardware is faulty and needs replacement because it is not a scenario that is observed by an individual, but many. Therefore, stick to what you are running trying a few tactics to resolve the error.
PRAM (Parameter RAM) is one of the ways you can try going through i.e. resetting PRAM, many times, is seen resolving startup issues. Therefore, restart the Mac and immediately press the combination “Command + Option + P + R key's" and do not release until you hear startup tone twice. In case the problem persists, restore your Mac, if you have an updated backup of your Time Machine. However, if you do not have any backup, you can try below mentioned procedure to Recover Mac Data.
Run your 4.x GB Mountain Lion installer on an external hard drive. Attach this external hard drive to your dead-Mac and restart holding ‘Option’ key. Select this drive from the drive list shown and start booting from it. Let it configure up to last phase of installation i.e. selecting OS X language and other devices.
Once the installation is complete, migrate all your data to any other internal volume to prevent data loss and run Disk Utility to format this internal OS X volume. Now, you can run the installer again to boot on this clean Mac volume. Verify and repair this volume using Disk Utility. Still, if you are unable to regain your data, you can go for Mac data recovery software. These tools are able to recover data even from formatted/deleted/lost volumes.
