How to Recover Data from Deleted Mac Partition

Disk utility is a disk management tool embedded in Mac OS X that performs several disk related tasks, such as creating, managing, and deleting a partition, imaging and restoring the complete hard drive as well as individual partitions, Verifying a disk and associated permissions and more. Though Disk Utility is an easy to work with tool, user needs to be careful and well versed with the tool while performing any of the disk related actions.

Users generally are seen complaining about their experiences with Disk Utility, wherein they attempt for disk partitioning and end up with data loss. The following dialogues reveal the situations, which dominate the Internet search:

“I am not able to modify the partitions of my Mac hard drive”
“Disk Utility is unable to resize my Mac partitions”
“Unable to create a new partition on my Mac with Disk Utility”
“Mac partition got deleted with Disk Utility”
and many more.

Let us take a scenario i.e. Mac partition got deleted with Disk Utility and analyze the situation when it is usually met.

Case 1: While Dividing any Existing Mac Partition:

Launch Disk Utility from the dock bar or click Go-> Applications-> Utility folder-> Disk Utility. Select the hard drive in the left pane and Partition tab in the right pane. Under Partition Scheme area, you can see the graphical structure of the hard drive that is divided into several partitions. Select the source partition in the graphical structure of the hard drive and click plus (+) button. You can see a Minus (-) button next to it that deletes the selected partition; however, it displays a warning message i.e. “Are you sure you want to remove partition “PartitionName”?” and gives options to ‘Cancel’ and ‘Remove’ it.

Case 2: While Rebuilding a Partition:

Launch Disk Utility. Select the source partition in the left pane and go to ‘Erase’ tab in the right pane where you can view the properties of the drive i.e. Format and Name of the partition. There you can find the ‘Erase’ option, clicking on which source partition is erased.

You can see that both the scenarios discussed above direct towards deleting a Mac partition (though, sometimes, mistakenly). Apart from this, there can also be some unknown or internal erroneous cause of a partition deletion, but not related to Disk Utility.

In case if you suffer a Mac partition loss or deletion unknowingly, you can use commercial Mac partition recovery software in order to recover the data from the concerned partition.
