What is Directory Damage and How to Repair the Disk in Mac OS X

A disk occupies some area for directory where the detail (names and locations) of files and folders is employed. If the directory is not updated correctly or fails to update, it's a clear indication that the directory is corrupt. Moreover, if there is some problem with Mac (such as a crash or power failure), the updated directory information, cached in memory by Mac, is never written to the disk that results in damage to the directory. Corruption of directory may remain unnoticed or it may be major, leaving files in 'inaccessible' state.

The accuracy of directory information depends on Mac OS performance, whether it performs all updates, maintenance operations with no unexpected interruptions or not. Furthermore, important information is cached in memory temporarily to speed up Mac machine operations rather than being saved in the disk immediately.

Some common interruptions include power failure, kernel crashes etc. that turn off the Mac based computer accidentally. If directory was not updated properly or some information was not saved in the disk, it indicates that directory is damaged and data loss has been caused. Moreover, if some program writes its data in the disk area that is occupied for directory, the directory becomes prone to damage. In such cases, the directory data gets overwritten and hence user loses access to data permanently.

If you happen to have such issue, follow the below given steps that will check for and repair corruption in directory on startup disk on Mac OS X:

1. Select the startup disk volume from the list of volumes given in the left of Disk Utility Window. Note that, the volume may also be named as 'Macintosh HD'.

2. In the Disk Utility window, click on First Aid tab. Following, click 'Repair Disk' button, it performs the repair.

Note: Some messages will be reported that help you determine whether the disk is repaired.

If 'Repair Disk' throws the following messages, the disk is repaired:

“No repairs were necessary”
“The volume has been repaired”

On the other hand, if the following messages are thrown as a result, 'Repair Disk' is failed:

“The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired”
“Volume needs repair”
“Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit”
“Error Code -9972”

In the cases where 'Repair Disk' fails to repair the disk, you can opt for an appropriate and reliable solution i.e. professional Data Recovery software Mac. These software are built by expert developers and are widely available online.
