Mac OS X allows you to divide your hard drive into several volumes for data storage. You store your personal as well as professional data, such as images, audio and video files, office documents, presentations etc., on these volumes. It is advised to keep a backup of your precious data, as you might do not know the possible threats to it. Every Mac volume has a header associated with it that stores the overall information of that particular volume. In case, if this header gets corrupt, Mac is not able to detect this volume and your data stored in it becomes completely inaccessible.
Moreover, it is also observed that a particular volume is not visible or mounting. To illustrate this scenario, let us take a real-time example.
You turn on your Mac and see that a particular volume is no more visible on both your desktop and Finder. It makes the situation critical, as you are not able to access your data stored in that volume. However, all other volumes are visible and accessible.
Causes
When a Mac volumes gets disappear, you certainly get panic and do not have any thought about what should be done to regain it. If we talk about the causes, there could be several reasons why a particular Mac volume is missing or not mounting. A few of them are mentioned below:

- Corrupt File System and fsck is not able to repair it.
- Disk Arbitration framework is used by another application that prevents volume auto-mounting.
- Partition type and file system mismatch etc.
- Partition Table error.
- Hardware failure.
Resolution
In case a particular Mac volume is not mounting, the overall data stored in it becomes inaccessible and you need to go to Disk Utility to mount or repair it. In the left pane of the Disk Utility windows, select the drive/volume that is not mounting and click mount from the Options menu. However, if a particular volume is corrupt or bad then you can repair it from Disk Utility->First Aid tab. It allows you to verify and repair the permissions as well as the disk itself in order to regain your inaccessible data.
Disk Utility repairs commonly observed errors; however, if it is not able to mount the volume, you can Recover Mac data from this un-mounted volume using advance data recovery software. These tools have a range of operating systems support and are able to recover up to 100 percent of data.
