Disk Clones – A Better Alternative to Backups

It is advised to maintain the backup of Mac, whether you are using it for business or just for your personal use at your home. Since in a due course of time, you store plenty of precious data, and if in case disasters like hard drive crash or accidental deletion occur, then this backup works as a boon as you can easily restore data from it.

You can either create backup on the second hard drive of your machine through the built-in Time Machine or can simply copy the ‘User’ folder to another drive. In this way, you have something with you to restore your data in various cases of data loss. Moreover, the data backup works as a boon when your Mac’s boot drive dies as after replacing the drive, you have to reinstall the Operating System (OS) and all the applications, and then you can restore your data from the backup. Although this entire process is not difficult, but time consuming, and this is where the Mac cloning comes into the picture.

Just like human clone, the clone of your Mac is its exact replica. To clone a drive all you need to have is an application that transfers all your data (including system files) from the ‘source’ drive to a ‘destination’ drive. However, the thing to be noted here is the size of the destination drive. The destination drive must be of the same size or of larger size than the source drive. After the completion of the cloning process, the destination drive or cloned drive is ready to be used. That means with the clone you can boot quickly your machine and start your working as you were working with your original machine.

Therefore, if you compare cloning with backup, then you can certainly say cloning is better because with it you need not to reinstall OS, perform all software and application updates, and then restore data. You simply need to replace the crashed or unbootable drive with the clone and the process will be reversed. This process could take an hour but that is quite less than a day long process of reinstallation and backup restoration.

A handful of tools for Mac cloning are available online. Most of these tools have simple intuitive user interface and thus are easy to use. Some reliable tools provide you the feature to set preferences to personalise the end task activities like system shutdown, play system, and send system to sleep.
