Some features of Mac OS X Lion are not supported for the disk....

Are you getting this error message while installing Mac OS X Lion? If Yes you are at right place read to find out why?

Usually format of the message is - “Some features of Mac OS X Lion are not supported for the disk (volume name)”. This is the way Apple want to inform that if you install the lion in this volume you will not able to enjoy some of the feature of OS X Lion.

Error Definition:  This error message means lion installer is facing problem in creating recovery HD. Apple has added Recovery HD with this launch to offer users a recovery tool so that user can use this drive in case of accidental file system error. Also, it solves the purpose of providing optional boot drive if in case it fails boot from main boot volume.

Reason: Generally such error message occurs in following two scenarios:

Non Standard Boot camp Setup: Standard method of boot camping is to create partition using boot camp utility no further  modification is to be made thereafter.  This error message may indicate that you have made some modification in the partition after boot camping or may be you have created the partition without using boot camp utility.

RAID Volume: This may also indicate that may be you are trying to install Lion in RAID volume.

What will happen we ignore these Errors and continue to Install Mac OS X Lion?

This error does not means that lion is not going to install in the disk you are trying to install it, else it actually means that Lion will install successfully on the disk and most of the features will also be available to you but some features which are due to recovery HD  will be unavailable. Recovery HD is not to run or install OS X Lion but its main task starts when your mac accidentally crashes out.

So what all is going to happen if you simply ignore these errors and install the OS X lion is:-

Unable to use disk utility to repair disk if somehow Mac accidentally shuts down
Unable to use Filevault to secure the data. It is to be noted here that Apple has upgraded filevault with OS X lion. It is made more reliable and secure now.

To use full feature of OS X Lion...

To enjoy all feature of Lion make sure you are installing Lion using the prescribed methods. If you are going to upgrade to Lion follow following steps to enjoy all feature of OS X Lion:

  • Make full backup of the data present in the HD including bootcamp partition (Normally Time Machine do not take backup of the bootcamp partition). You can use your trusted third party software (However I have used Stellar Clone to make bootable backup) or include bootcamp partition drive in Time machine backup.
  • Simply erase the drive using disk utility after making yourself sure about the data backuped.
  • Now create Mac OS X partition (journaled) .
  • Install Mac OS X 10.6.8 and then download Lion installer from Mac App Store and install it.
  • If you using bootcamp, run bootcamp again to make new bootcamp partition to re-store the data whose backup was taken before installing Lion.
