How to Use Disk Utility to Fend Off Data Loss

A wide range of users are now migrating from Windows to Mac due to its intuitive graphical interface and a range of innovative applications that make up for a good user experience. As the user base of Mac is increasing every day, various problems relating to data corruption and loss have come into the picture. Disk corruption on Mac usually occurs at three levels, i.e. directory of Mac OS X startup disk, permissions on system files, and cache files (system, application, and user-specific caches). This corruption is caused due to various unforeseeable events, such as application crashes, hard restarts, bad sectors on the hard disk, and defective hard drives.

Directory corruption can be easily resolved using Apple's Disk Utility. However, a few types of directory corruption (such as overlapped files or extents) may cause corruption in your data files. File corruption cannot be repaired using Disk Utility. Any type of file system corruption results in serious data loss on Mac. For instance, when you try to access a file stored on your Mac hard drive, you may receive the following error on screen:

'-127 fsDSIntErr internal file system error'
This error results due to corruption on your HFS or HFS+ based volume on which the file is stored. You can fix the problem by running Disk Utility on the affected corrupt volume as follows:

  • On the 'Utilities' menu, select 'Disk Utility'. The Disk Utility window opens.
  • From the left pane of the Disk Utility window, select the volume to be repaired.
  • Now, select the First Aid tab on this window and then click 'Repair Disk' button.
  • Once the repair process is completed, check out all the messages reported by the process.

One of the following messages implies that Disk Utility has failed to repair the disk.

'The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.'

Or

'Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.'

In such circumstances, you should take help of professional Mac data recovery software like Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery. The advanced utility use safe, proprietary mechanisms to recover all lost, deleted, or inaccessible data from corrupt hard drives and volumes. It supports recovery from HFS, HFS+ and FAT file system based storage media. With the help of this tool, you can perform deleted file recovery and recover your vital data even emptied from the 'Trash' bin of the system. The software incorporate a useful feature that allows creating an exact image of your hard drive. You can image the entire hard drive or take snapshots of a selected region of the drive.
